Le centre-ville et la plupart des banlieues sont situées sur la partie plate et sablonneuse qui s'étend entre le Darling Scarp et l'océan Indien. Les sols de cette région sont tout à fait stériles et il ne pousse pas grand chose sur les terres. La région métropolitaine s'étend jusqu'à Yanchep dans le nord, et jusqu'à Mandurah au sud, la distance qui les sépare est d'environ 125 kilomètres par la route: une petite distance au format de l'australie.
